Apartment No. 9 —
Sete Rios
This project aimed to renovate the kitchen in an apartment from the 90s. The existing kitchen was, like the rest of the apartment, complicated: a difficult combination of spaces for circulation and permanence, structure and services, resulted in a very cluttered floor plan, an effect that is mitigated by the abundant apposition of fittings – doors, cabinets, mouldings and skirtings – in a semi-traditional style.
Our first gesture was to place the kitchen beyond the space of the apartment – as we had done, in another way, in Apartment No. 6. This time, we cut a hole in the apartment’s wall with a 5 mm-thick brushed stainless-steel plate.
Inside the kitchen, we looked for the right place for everything and the simplest configuration for the whole. We eliminated the old plan clutter, designing a rectangular space that adapts as it approaches the window, where it creates a place to rest and a frame for natural light. Natural and artificial light flood the space and create, in the stainless-steel portico, ever-changing effects.
